I parted with Ōno, the civil rights activist, my rock and fortress. Now alone, although there had been an attempt on the Patron’s life and my relationship with him had been denounced, I gave no more thought to the fact that I was in immediate danger. I figured neither the Opposition Police nor the Yamame Corps would see any sense in making me their target at present. One of them had successfully injured the Big Shot, so they wouldn’t consider a small fry like me worth their time. But, you see, if the Patron dies from his injuries, my monthly paychecks for the preparation of briefing papers will stop, and I’ll have to worry about how to make a living. Since every paycheck from the power company now goes straight to my wife/ex-wife, I’d have to find some other way to feed my voracious adolescent appetite, not to mention that supporting my adult son, and probably his lover, would also become my job. The pressing problem is that there’s enough money to tide me over for two weeks or so, but then what? Although I wanted to just hop in a cab and get home quickly—Mori and the girl should have been back by then—I took a train because I was so shaken by the impending financial crisis, and after several transfers, finally made it home. But the pair hadn’t returned yet.

I got in just in time to watch the late news report on the Big Shot attack. It seems that one of the assailants, who had short-circuited the secretary’s phone line, contacted the Big Shot on his private line, and paid him a visit while the secretary was out on lunch break. A half an hour later the secretary returned to find the Big Shot unconscious, with a blow to his head. A climbing pick—possibly the assailant’s weapon—and blood not matching the victim’s were found at the scene.

A pick? My mind raced. The pre-switchover Mori sometimes accompanied me when I presented my briefings—I don’t remember the exact scheduled time. As you know, our children never interfere with adults’ conversation. Every time I set up a time and date with the Big Shot, I arranged it on a private line, just like the one mentioned on the TV. A loud voice swelled within me, flatly rejecting my suspicion that the assailants might have been Mori and the girl. If our switchover was meant to be part of the fulfillment of a mission given us by the Cosmic Will, why couldn’t Mori take me along with him? Even if my role was merely to stand by him as a witness? Yes. That would be the reason! In the days when I lived with the presentiment of the switchover to come, I often dreamed that Mori and I would overthrow the Patron on the very day celebrating the consolidation of his political power. That’s it, the dream is proof, Mori and I were together! How could he fail to fulfill the mission entrusted to him? If that ever happened, the switchover would just be a cruel joke on us.
